Ways to work towards your financial goals
Life insurance & family protection
May relate to: Protecting your family
Life insurance is a contract in which the insurer agrees to pay a benefit to your chosen beneficiaries if you pass away while the policy is in force, subject to the policy's terms and conditions.
Some policies provide coverage for a set period (often called term insurance), while others are designed to last longer and may include other features. Coverage amounts, costs, and conditions differ by policy and by person.
Questions to consider
- Who depends on my income today, and for how long?
- What expenses and obligations would my family need to cover?
- What coverage do I already have — for example, through my employer?
- How much can I comfortably set aside on a regular basis?
Education planning
May relate to: Preparing for children's education
Education planning is about building funds over time so that school expenses are easier to manage when they arrive. Because the timeline is often known in advance, starting earlier usually gives you more flexibility.
Families use different approaches — from dedicated savings to insurance-based plans that combine protection with a savings or investment component. Each has its own features, costs, and trade-offs.
Questions to consider
- When will my child likely start college or university?
- What kind of school or program am I planning for?
- What would happen to my child's education plans if my income stopped?
- How much flexibility do I need if plans change?
Retirement planning
May relate to: Preparing for retirement
Retirement planning means estimating the lifestyle you want later in life, how long you may need to fund it, and how you can build towards it over time.
Government pension programs such as SSS or GSIS may cover part of your needs. Many people also consider personal savings, investments, or insurance-based plans to help fill any gap.
Questions to consider
- At what age would I like to retire?
- What monthly expenses do I expect in retirement, including healthcare?
- What pension or retirement benefits do I already expect to receive?
- How comfortable am I with investment risk over the long term?
Savings-oriented goals
May relate to: Developing savings habits
A strong savings foundation usually starts with an emergency fund that is easy to access, followed by savings for specific goals such as a home, travel, or starting a business.
Some financial products are designed to encourage disciplined, regular saving while also providing protection. Whether these suit you depends on your timeline, how easily you may need to access the money, and the product's terms.
Questions to consider
- Do I have an emergency fund I can reach quickly?
- What am I saving for, and by when?
- How important is it that I can withdraw the money at any time?
- Would a structured, regular savings plan help me stay consistent?
Investment-linked insurance
May relate to: Long-term goals, where you are comfortable with investment risk
Investment-linked life insurance — often called variable unit-linked insurance, or VUL, in the Philippines — combines life insurance protection with investments in funds that you choose.
Part of what you pay goes towards insurance coverage and charges, and part is invested. The value of the investment portion moves with the performance of the underlying funds.
Important: The investment portion is not guaranteed. Fund values can go down as well as up, and past performance does not guarantee future results. You could get back less than you paid in.
Questions to consider
- How long can I keep money invested without needing it?
- How would I feel if my fund value went down for a period of time?
- Do I understand the charges and how they affect my fund value?
- Am I looking mainly for protection, investment, or both?
